International Students

See Yourself Here

Take the first step on a life-changing journey. Join a community that makes global perspectives integral to the academic curriculum, that values a multiculturally diverse student body, and that is dedicated to the academic and personal development of each individual student. At Brimmer our international students come from many countries, including China, South Africa, Korea, Brazil, Australia, Saudi Arabia, and Denmark. They contribute to all areas of the School and community life and help make our institution dynamic and collaborative.

Supporting Your Success

We are mindful of the fact that international students may have specific needs that require support. Through effective and consistent communication, our Co-Directors of International Students work with families during the admissions process and continue to support students and families throughout their time at Brimmer.

We accept well-qualified children at every grade level who are developing their English proficiency. Some of these students require English language support, and we offer courses and tutoring that help develop speaking, reading, writing, and listening skills, providing a strong foundation for success in a mainstream classroom.

List of 2 items.

  • Middle and Upper School International Admissions

Students in the Middle and Upper Schools are expected to have proficiency in English. While English Language Support (ELS) is offered to students who may not yet be independently successful in their classes, there is no formal English as a Second Language (ESL) program. The ELS and Foundations of English classes benefit students who are adept at English but may require support in certain areas of their language development. The classroom instruction is intended to supplement and provide enrichment to the core curriculum. For qualified candidates who need support above and beyond the classes offered, tutoring may be recommended or required.

To learn more about the application requirements please see the application process page of the website. Please note that a TOEFL or TOEFL Junior is not required but it is strongly recommended.
  • Lower School International Admissions

PK through Grade 5 students take a Lower School Admissions assessment as part of the Brimmer application process. This includes a test component that helps us determine whether a child is at the beginning, intermediate, or advanced stage of English language learning. The Admissions Committee carefully reviews each student’s application to make the best decision on their candidacy. Some students may be accepted to Brimmer on the condition that tutoring for reading and/or writing will be required.

Living Arrangements

Upper School students may live with a host family in the local area, while Middle and Lower School students must live with their parents.
