Haitian Food in Collaboration with French Plays

Our Grade 3 French plays are a beloved interdisciplinary tradition at Brimmer, bringing together Drama, Music, Art, and French for a collaborative performance. Each year, the plays are set in a different French-speaking country, often one that holds special meaning for our students. This year, our third graders present adaptations of Eric Carle’s The Very Busy Spider and The Very Hungry Caterpillar, set in Haiti! Our Lower School Creative Arts Team has worked to reimagine the show to feature traditional Haitian foods, adding a rich cultural twist to the story.

But the collaboration doesn’t stop there! Chef Taran and his incredible Kitchen Team have brought the experience full circle! This week, students are enjoying Haitian-inspired dishes featured in the plays, including Soup Joumou (Haitian Freedom Soup), Gato Anana, Griot, Pikliz, and more! It’s a week full of creativity, culture, and connection!

Lower School Drama teacher Rachel Wolf Heyman says, "The third-grade cast members were thrilled to see their characters reflected on their plates. As the other students learned about this week’s menu and the Haitian delicacies we were going to try alongside the very hungry caterpillar, many shared personal connections to the food. 'My grandmother makes that,' was said with gasps of excitement from multiple students upon learning that we would have Soup Joumou for lunch.
